When a truck driver is on the road, there is very little time for staying in shape. The job consists mainly of long periods sitting behind the wheel, making sure freight reaches its destination on time. According to a national survey of truck drivers, 69% of drivers are classified as overweight. Being overweight leads to a multitude of health problems, including diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Yet, how can a driver maintain an active and healthy lifestyle when their job consists mostly of driving from one location to another? Well, there are several steps any truck driver can take to improve their health by getting in shape.

Create an Exercise Routine

First and foremost, no matter what exercises you decide you want to do, it is vital to get a routine planned. Whether you want to walk, bike, or jog, you will need to do your exercise regularly. Make sure to set aside time every day to reach your fitness goals through physical activity.

Go for a Walk

One of the easiest ways to get active is to take a walk. You can plan a walk during a rest-stop, on a break, or before your workday. You don’t have to travel miles on foot to get the health benefits of walking. Taking a short 30-minute walk each day will help you get in shape and strengthen your heart.

Ride a Bike

Going for a bike ride is not something you would consider possible as a truck driver, yet compact foldable bikes have become commonplace in recent years. These bicycles are easy to store and transport and can easily fit in most truck cabs. Instead of visiting the local truck stop during your lunch or dinner break, take a ride on your bike! You can use your bike in a parking lot or along the scenic walking paths often found at truck stops across the country.

Aerobics

Aerobics is the ultimate way for a trucker to get into shape. These exercises can be done anywhere and at any time! Aerobics is an excellent physical activity that strengthens your heart and aids in losing those extra pounds. Try to do regular aerobics at least once a day to better your health by getting back in shape.

A few aerobic exercises you can do nearly anywhere include:

  • Jumping jacks
  • Jumping rope
  • Burpees
  • Running or jogging
  • Squat jumps
  • Strength and cardio circuits that include squats, lunges, push-ups, planks, and glute bridges

A Little Effort Goes a Long Way

Always remember that you don’t have to dedicate a significant amount of time to start getting in shape. Getting 30 minutes of exercise daily will help you lose weight, gain better mobility, and strengthen your heart!
