Major national crises tend to expose truths about society that otherwise go unnoticed during life’s routine. They reveal the individuals and institutions among us who are genuinely essential to upholding the standard of living we’ve come to expect. The unfolding of COVID-19 is no different. At TQM Logistics, we’re proud to provide CDL driver jobs in DE and the surrounding regions, and we tip our collective hat to some of our nation’s most important often-unsung heroes: truck drivers.

Extended Hours of Service for Emergency Relief

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued a federal waiver to the Hours of Service Rule for commercial vehicle drivers transporting goods related to COVID-19. This decree was issued on March 13th and will last until the end of the emergency declared by the President.

“…this declaration will help America’s commercial drivers get these critical goods to impacted areas faster and more efficiently,” claimed FMCSA Acting Administrator Jim Mullen.

The waiver applies to equipment and supplies of food for the emergency restocking of stores. The surge in demand for reliable trucking is best showcased in the rise in SONAR’S Outbound Tender Volume Index, which has skyrocketed even as U.S. economic activity slows.

How Truck Drivers Are Helping Meet Immediate Needs

FMCSA’s declaration provides relief for commercial motor vehicle operations that provide direct assistance in supporting emergency relief efforts intended to meet the immediate needs for the following:

While there is no limit on the hours of service behind the wheel of the commercial vehicle, the FMCSA order says that when a driver has completed a delivery, they must receive 10 hours of off duty if delivering goods and 8 hours if transporting individuals.

Taking the High Road

Just as they do when a natural disaster or national emergency hits, America’s professional truck drivers are placed on the front lines by delivering critical supplies and aid to fellow citizens. As the nation bands together to tackle the present health challenges, we must recognize the vital role of truckers that maintain society’s most essential functions. In doing so, it’s crucial to be aware of the shifting trucking laws standards that’s mission is to keep the whole nation above board.
